including positive science of bipartisanship. and mitt romney drowns his sorrows in the bottom of a bottle of milk. let's get to the news here at 30 rock in new york city. we begin with general david petraeus and his sudden and unexpected resignation as director of the central intelligence agency on friday, citing an extramarital affair. kristen welker reports. >> reporter: according to a senior federal official and close friend of david petraeus, 37-year-old jill kelly complained to fbi agents about being harassed by ball la broadwell, david petraeus' biographer. a senior official says jill kelly is involved in wounded warrior fund raising in tampa. she is married. petraeus' downfall started when kelly complained to the fbi that she was receiving intimidating

e-mails from broadwell. law enforcement and multiple u.s. officials tell nbc news those e-mails led to the discovery between others between general petraeus and broadwell and were indicative of an extramarital affair. >> my first reaction was disbelief. >> reporter: steven boylen is petraeus' former spokesperson. he has spoken to him twice this weekend and says his former boss is remorseful. >> he said he had an excellent job. and in his words, he screwed up. >> reporter: the fbi agents interviewed general petraeus in late october and concluded there was no criminal violation. members of congress were asking why the fbi did not inform them or the president sooner. >> we received no advanced notice. it was like a lightning bolt. this is something that could have had an effect on national security. i think we should have been told. there is a way to do it.

>> reporter: this comes as we are learning more about the days leading up to petraeus' resignation. eric cantor said in late october, he was tipped off about the situation. i was contacted by an fbi employee, concerned that sensitive, class if ied information may have been compromised. and made certain that director muller was made known of these allegations. however, the president first learned about the incident on thursday, the day petraeus offered his resignation. a senior law enforcement official said the agent's call to a congressional staffer had no effect on the investigation. or the timing of disclosure. still, lawmakers say there's a lot of questions that need to be answered. >> it appears that they're saying the fbi didn't realize until election day that general petraeus was involved. just doesn't add up. >> reporter: several of petraeus' former aides say broadwell had too much access to

the general. she hasn't been shy about sharing details about her relationship with petraeus. and their shared interest in running. >> it ended up being kind of a test for both of us, since we both ran pretty quickly. but that was a foundation of our relationship. >> that was kristen welker reporting. nbc news has reached out to general petraeus, and paula broadwell and jill kelly. he was to testify about the attack in benghazi. now, mike morrell is expected to testify in his place. andrea mitchell who broke this story late last week will join us later on on "morning joe." as congress returns tomorrow, members will be confronted with a looming showdown over the deficit and how to avoid the fiscal cliff, the year-end deadline that will trigger tax increases and staggering spending cuts if congress files act. according to "the wall street

journal," the white house is going to have an aggressive campaign, that will take the president outside of washington to build support for his proposals. it's a much different approach from the private, closed-door negotiations with republicans that failed last year. the president will also meet with labor and business leaders later this week, in an effort to repair relations and build support for his plan before he sits down with congressional leaders on friday. just days after the president reiterated his hard line on not extending tax cuts for the wealthy. bill crystal suggested his party should be open to new ideas. >> i think honest debate, fresh thinking, leadership in the republican party and leadership of the conservative movement has to pull back. let people float new ideas. let's have a serious debate. don't scream and yell. it won't kill the country if we raise taxes on millionaires. it really won't, i don't think. i don't understand why republicans don't take obama's offer to freeze taxes for

everyone below $250,000. really? the republican party is going to fall on its sword to defend a bunch of millionaires? >> speaker john boehner on friday, appeared to give a little ground, suggesting that limits on tax deductions could be part of a deal, something that senior obama adviser, david axelrod, said was a step in the right direction. >> i think the speaker's comments have been encouraging. and obviously, there's money to be gained by closing some of these loopholes and applying them to deficit reduction. so, i think there's a lot of ways to skin this cat, so long as everybody comes with a positive, constructive attitude toward the task. >> axelrod also pointed out that exit polling from the election showed 60% of the american agreed with raising taxes on the highest earners. there's a renewed focus on immigration policy, following a presidential election that saw a

growing divide between republicans and the hispanic community. now, two senators on opposite sides of the aisle says they're confident they can push through reform. chuck schumer and lindsey graham are revisiting a plan they proposed together back in 2010. >> i think we have a darn good chance, using this blueprint, to get something done this year. the republican party has learned that being anti-illegal -- anti-immigrant doesn't work for them politically. and they know it. >> it's one thing to shoot yourself in the foot. just don't reload the gun. so, i intend not to reload this gun when it comes to hispanics. i intend to tear this wall down and pass an immigration reform bill that's an american solution to an american problem. we have nobody to blame but ourselves when it comes to losing hispanics. and we can get them back with an effort on our part. >> two years ago, president obama called schumer and graham's proposal a promising

framework. the greek parliament has approved an austerity budget for the next year. let's take a look at the early markets. cnbc's julia chatterly is live in london. greece had to do this, despite mass protest in the street. >> absolutely. one difference we saw was there was no reported violence, which is something we've seen over the last few votes. this budget vote did pass. along with the austerity vote we saw last week. and what this means is now, greece is qualified to unblock the next bailout. somewhere around $40 billion worth. this is crucial at the same time we have the eurozone finance ministers meeting today. they're not expected to sign off on the $40 billion worth. why? we're waiting for the debt sustainability analysis. this is a crucial issue, too.

bears, now 7-2. saints at home against the undefeated falcons. saints down 10-0. chris ivory gets the handoff and look at this. bounces to the outside. makes a couple of defenders miss. and finishes off the run with a stiff-arm. that's a 56-yard touchdown for chris ivory. step ahead to tepid of the fourth quarter. saints holding on to a one-point lead with 16 seconds to go. falcons going for it on fourth and one. but matt ryan's pass is dropped by tony gonzalez. and that would seal it. saints win, 31-27, handing the falcons their first loss of the season. new orleans has won four of their last five games. what happened in philadelphia? >> let's look at the eagles hosting the cowboys. a critical game for both teams. tied at 7-7 in the second quarter. michael vick scrambles and is eventually brought down hard. his head bounces off the turf. vick would stay in the game one more play before leaving with a concussion.

so, rookie nick fowles comes in to replace vick. one-score game at this point. but the pass from fowles is tipped in the air. and carr raced down the sideline and goes in for the 46-yard touchdown. cowboys win. cowboys are 4-5. eagles drop to 3-6. >> not a lot of good news for the east coast, if you look at what happened to the eagles. but at least we have the new york jets. we have the jets. and mark sanchez. this guy -- >> he's like a model. >> i'm so glad that rex ryan is staying with this guy. >> when you see talent, you have to commit to it. time to check in on the jets out on the weekend, facing the seahawks. it was more of the same for the jets offense. mark sanchez tears down his receiver. and richard sherman steps in front of the pass for the interception. jets squander a chance to put points on the board. jump ahead to the fourth
